On January 30, 2020, the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee of the World Health Organization declared the outbreak of the respiratory disease caused by a new coronavirus, known as COVID-19, a “public health emergency of international concern.”1

The disease initially indicated animal-to-person spread, later suggesting person-to-person spread after patients were diagnosed without exposure to animals.
