Expert Spotlight: Meet Kroll’s Business Transformation Leader Stephan Lechel

Stephan Lechel is helping shape the future of business transformation at Kroll by bringing rigor, speed and global insight into the challenges facing today’s industries. From supply chain complexity to operational inefficiency, he’s guiding clients through high-stakes decisions with practical solutions and measurable outcomes. His work spans automotive, consumer goods and healthcare sectors where resilience and agility are now critical boardroom themes.

Whether he’s redesigning plant footprints, streamlining production with advanced automation or advising on strategic market shifts, Stephan’s hallmark is execution. “We’re past the era of theory, we’re delivering change throughout businesses,” he says.

And when he’s not guiding transformation efforts, you might find him wakeboarding near Heidelberg or playing electric guitar in his home studio, activities that reflect the energy and creativity he brings to every engagement.

Putting Operational Excellence Back in the Boardroom

What was once dismissed as an “already implemented” concept is now being reexamined with fresh urgency. Operational excellence has returned to the C-suite, driven by pandemic disruptions, geopolitical tension and fragile global supply chains.

Stephan sees this as a pivotal moment. “In the past, many organizations claimed they had lean or efficiency programs in place, but few sustained the discipline needed to see it through,” he explains. “Today, the conversation has shifted. Leaders want to know how they can harden operations, reduce costs, achieve best-in-class processes, all while remaining flexible in an unpredictable market.”

Across industries, there’s renewed momentum, particularly in the context of cost control and footprint rationalization. Stephan works directly with clients to uncover and unlock hidden efficiencies, creating tangible impact they can see in KPIs, P&Ls and frontline performance.

A Global Lens for Local Solutions

One of Stephan’s strengths is his ability to navigate both local execution and international strategy. With experience working across Europe and Asia, he understands the importance of culture, logistics and how policy can impact decision making.

“When I speak with clients about relocating production to regions like Vietnam or Indonesia, it’s not just a cost question, it’s about strategic resilience,” Stephan notes. “But nearshoring comes with trade-offs like labor costs going up. That’s where best-in-class process design and automation become essential.”

He’s currently advising clients on “Smart Factory and Industry 4.0” concepts, highly automated production models that minimize human input and increase control with a focus on artificial intelligence. “It’s not science fiction. It’s already happening, and companies need to be ready to adapt,” he says.

From Entrepreneur to Architect

Before joining Kroll, Stephan helped build and scale a transformation practice in record time. “I’ve always preferred building something over simply advising,” he shares. That builder’s mindset is what Kroll saw as a perfect fit for growing the Business Transformation practice.

His client work blends tactical focus with strategic ambition. One recent example involved a UK-based automotive supplier, where Stephan led footprint redesign during a period of severe disruption. By reevaluating plant networks and implementing new operational processes, the client was able to cut costs, improve efficiency and reposition for long-term growth.

Kroll’s Vision for Growth

Stephan believes Kroll is poised to scale its Business Transformation offering significantly. “We’re not just delivering engagements; we’re building a global service line,” he says. That includes expanding the team, growing revenue and leveraging Kroll’s global network to accelerate introductions and deepen client relationships.

This growth story isn’t just about business development. It’s about shaping a new kind of consulting culture that’s lean, hands-on and grounded in shared accountability.

More than Metrics

Behind the strategist is a creative spirit. Stephan has been wakeboarding for nearly two decades, taking late-evening rides on a lake near Heidelberg to unwind. And in his basement studio, he plugs in an electric guitar to decompress. “It’s my reset button,” he says. “Ten minutes with the amp on, and my mind is clear again.”

As a teenager, Stephan recorded a four-song EP with friends (a trend throughout Restructuring as seen by fellow Managing Director, Philip Dakin). Though he no longer performs publicly, the musical impulse is there. “It’s about rhythm, structure and flow - all of which you find in business too.”

Transformation with Purpose

Stephan’s approach from top floor to shop floor is more than a tagline. It’s a lived philosophy that informs both client engagements and internal team dynamics. “We tackle the same messy problems, wear the same gear and solve things together,” he says.

At Kroll, transformation isn’t abstract. It’s about impact felt across functions, borders and individuals. “If we’re not making people’s lives easier and businesses stronger, then we’re missing the mark.”
