Recently, in a three-part webinar series, organized by Kroll, a division of Duff & Phelps, Industrial Growth Platform (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. and Mori Hamada & Matsumoto (Singapore) LLP, panelists discussed how Japanese overseas businesses can adapt and prepare to operate in different post-pandemic environments. This series was conducted in Japanese.
Moderator: Kunio Sakaide, Managing Director and Head of Japan Desk, Forensic Investigations and Intelligence practice, Kroll
Panelists
- Koki Sakata, CEO, Industrial Growth Platform (Singapore) Pte. Ltd.
- Takeshi Komatsu, Partner and Co-representative, Mori Hamada & Matsumoto (Singapore) LLP
The sessions addressed several topics aimed at assisting Japanese companies as they undergo corporate transformation in their business. The first session provided an overview of what the new business environment is likely to be post COVID-19. This included a discussion on the corporate transformation process as companies look at restructuring their business portfolios, including withdrawing and maintaining existing investments and supply chain portfolio companies. The speakers also talked about some of the associated compliance risks arising in the process and the risk mitigation measures that companies can take.
In the second session, the speakers discussed operational transformation and governance within the overseas office as more Japanese companies decentralize and reorganize business functions in business operations abroad. In doing so, companies need to be prepared to effectively manage and monitor overseas business operations.
In the last session of this series, the speakers explored possible new investment opportunities and risk mitigation strategies when exploring new opportunities. The audience were taken through various scenarios in a mock case study in Southeast Asia related to M&A for startups. Through these scenarios, the speakers shared recommended measures and how Japanese companies can succeed in new investment in the growing startup culture in Southeast Asia.
