In February 2026, Germany-based VoltStorage GmbH (“VoltStorage“), a pioneer in long-duration energy storage solutions developing iron-salt battery technology, signed documentation for the sale of its intellectual property to ESS Tech Inc. (“ESS”). The IP will be integrated into the ESS platform, combining two highly complementary technologies to deliver the most flexible and cost efficient long duration energy storage solution on the market, establishing a new benchmark for performance, sustainability and affordability across the battery technology sector.
VoltStorage had filed for insolvency (debtor-in-possession proceedings) in April 2025 and Kroll served as the exclusive M&A advisor to VoltStorage, represented by CRO Alexander Reus (Anchor Rechtsanwälte) and the insolvency trustee, Dr. Hubert Ampferl (Dr. Beck & Partner), in connection with the transaction.
