Expert Spotlight: Meet Our Restructuring Expert George Gwee

From crypto crises to global recoveries, George Gwee is shaping the future of restructuring with bold moves and sharper insights.

George Gwee’s career reads like a blueprint for the next generation of restructuring leaders. He began at ground level, immersed in complex assignments from the start and quickly proved himself capable of handling the most novel and demanding challenges. Today he is recognized across Asia as one of the foremost specialists in crypto and digital asset restructuring, a sector where precedent is scarce and the stakes are high.

Alongside this professional intensity lies a surprising personal passion: wildlife photography. Whether waiting in minus 35 degrees in Inner Mongolia to capture owls in flight or preparing for a safari in Tanzania, he thrives on patience, precision and timing. It is a pursuit that mirrors his professional ethos and hints at the balance behind his rapid rise.

Building Expertise through Dynamic Challenges

Early in his career, George discovered his talent for strategic and commercial analysis. He gravitated toward advisory and turnaround work, where judgment and creativity mattered as much as statutory compliance. His first major test came with KrisEnergy, a project that demanded commercial insight. Soon after, he led a full-scale restructuring of a Southeast Asian fitness conglomerate, negotiating with lenders while driving operational improvements across multiple jurisdictions. These experiences sharpened his instincts and accelerated his progression, positioning him to take on the most complex assignments in the region.

Vauld: Delivering Recoveries in Real Time

George’s reputation in crypto restructuring was forged in the case of Vauld, the first digital asset platform to be restructured under a scheme of arrangement. The challenge was not only to design the scheme and have it approved by creditors, but to implement it against resistance. In 2025 his team secured the recovery and global distribution of over USD80 million to creditors, overcoming boardroom disputes and court challenges. “It wasn’t just about proposing a scheme,” he explains. “It was about seeing it through and maximizing recoveries.” The case demonstrated his ability to combine dispute resolution, asset recovery and operational execution in a sector where few precedents exist.

If Vauld was about execution, WazirX was about scale. With over four million creditors and liabilities of half a billion U.S. dollars, the case tested the boundaries of jurisdiction and enforcement. The company was incorporated in Singapore but operated almost entirely in India. George, the Kroll Team and the company’s legal advisors persuaded the Singapore court to recognize jurisdiction, then leveraged that order in India to address creditor claims. Funding was secured to restart operations and WazirX has fully reactivated as a cryptocurrency exchange. The case set a precedent for managing cross-border crypto restructurings  and reinforced George’s standing as a sector specialist.

Insights on Risk and Resilience

For George, the systemic risks in crypto are less about fraud and more about fragility. “Security is a huge issue,” he notes. “State sponsored hackers target exchanges and custodians and the landscape is always shifting.” Volatility compounds the challenge, with liquidity mismatches leaving platforms vulnerable to sudden shocks. His work shows how foresight in structuring, combined with disciplined execution, can protect value and preserve operations in this volatile environment.

A Leader in The Making

Though younger than many of his peers, George’s trajectory has been fast and decisive. He has already led precedent setting restructurings, managed creditor recoveries on a global scale and persuaded courts across jurisdictions to recognize novel approaches. Within Kroll he is seen as a leader in the making, not only for his technical expertise but also for his ability to inspire confidence in clients and colleagues alike. His career demonstrates that leadership is not measured by years served but by impact delivered.

Beyond The Office

Away from restructuring, George is a passionate wildlife photographer. He specializes in capturing birds in flight, from soaring eagles to diving hawks. His pursuits have taken him to the snowy depths of Inner Mongolia and soon will take him to the plains of East Africa for the great migration. It is a pursuit that demands patience, precision and readiness to act in a split second. The same qualities define his professional life, where timing and judgment can determine the success of a restructuring.
