Transforming Enterprise Identity Visibility Across One of the Largest Financial Institutions in the United States

When one of the nation's largest financial institutions set out to modernize identity security across its complex technology landscape, it established an ambitious objective: onboard more than 600 critical applications to a next-generation identity security platform in just 12 months. Kroll’s Digital Identity team rapidly mobilized to lead the initiative, navigating evolving business priorities, diverse integration requirements and enterprise-scale stakeholder coordination. The result was a successful transformation that delivered enterprise-wide access visibility, strengthened identity risk oversight and established a scalable foundation for future cybersecurity and governance initiatives. More than 600 applications were onboarded, over 1,100 application teams were engaged, and more than 300 integrations were connected, positioning the organization to drive continued risk reduction and digital transformation.

The Challenge

Following years of growth and acquisitions, a major financial institution faced increasing complexity in managing identities, access and authorization across a large and diverse application ecosystem. Limited centralized visibility created challenges in understanding who had access to what, how access was granted and where potential risks existed.

To address these challenges, the organization launched a large-scale identity modernization initiative centered on onboarding 600 critical applications to its identity security platform within a compressed timeline. Beyond the initial deployment, the initiative was expected to establish a foundation capable of supporting the integration of any additional applications and enable broader strategic objectives across governance, risk management, cloud security and Zero Trust.

Kroll’s Solution

Drawing on deep expertise in identity governance and large-scale IAM transformation, Kroll rapidly established the program structure, governance model and onboarding framework needed to achieve success at enterprise scale. Working closely with executive stakeholders and technology partners, Kroll developed a repeatable onboarding approach that balanced speed, quality and risk management while coordinating efforts across more than 1,100 application teams.

As business priorities evolved throughout the engagement, Kroll successfully adapted the delivery approach without disrupting momentum or extending timelines. The team managed a diverse portfolio of integration patterns, streamlined onboarding activities and provided executive-level reporting, governance support and strategic guidance that enabled informed decision-making at every stage. The result was a highly coordinated, enterprise-wide effort that successfully onboarded more than 600 applications and established over 300 connected integrations, creating a powerful new source of identity intelligence across the organization.

The Impact

Enterprise-Wide Identity Visibility

The organization gained unprecedented visibility into access across its application landscape, enabling clearer understanding of entitlement structures, access pathways and potential areas of risk exposure.

Accelerated Risk Reduction

The new platform provides enhanced oversight of privileged access, orphaned accounts, dormant access, toxic combinations and concentration risks, strengthening the organization's overall security posture.

Scalable Governance Foundation

The engagement established a trusted data foundation that supports reporting, dashboards, governance activities and ongoing risk analysis, enabling more effective and sustainable identity governance.

Strategic Enablement for Future Transformation

Beyond application onboarding, the program created a platform for future cybersecurity initiatives, including Zero Trust adoption, access risk management, security analytics and broader enterprise transformation efforts. The organization now has the operational and governance framework needed to continue its identity security journey with confidence.
