Dr. Lynn Van Male is Managing Director – Threat Management in the Enterprise Security Risk Management (ESRM) practice, based in Washington State.

Dr. Van Male is an acknowledged thought leader and innovator in the behavioral threat assessment and management (BTAM) field, bringing to Kroll expertise developed over nearly 27 years across U.S. federal government and private-sector entities. She has a strong focus on applying data-driven multidisciplinary processes that promote accurate behavioral threat assessments, which in turn inform customized threat management solutions in complex environments. The Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP) celebrated the caliber of her work by naming her the second person to receive the Professional Achievement Award. This honor recognizes ATAP members who, throughout their professional career, are “well-respected and have made a sustained, extraordinary, and positive impact on the field of threat assessment on a national and/or international level.”

Dr. Van Male has an established record of evolving enterprise-wide, cross-sector, best practice threat management capabilities that meet and exceed legislative and accreditation requirements. She applies a strong client-centered approach to her multidisciplinary BTAM work, recognizing that addressing the human component of safety risk mitigation is essential to achieving effective threat management outcomes.

In recent years, Dr. Van Male provided subject matter expertise regarding the impact of critical events on individuals, work groups, and organizations to a wide variety of public and private entities. Her work in BTAM and general violence prevention has been presented by invitation across the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and the European Union. Dr. Van Male served on The Joint Commission’s technical advisory panel informing the development of national workplace violence prevention requirements in its environment of care, leadership, and human resource standards. She is a contributing author of the American Hospital Association’s and FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit’s defining resource on BTAM in the healthcare sector. Dr. Van Male also provided BTAM subject matter expertise as a member of the National Quality Forum’s focused work on violence prevention in healthcare. She was an invited contributor at the FBI symposium addressing targeted attack prevention and served on the scientific merit committees for the 4th, 5th, and 6th International Conference on Violence in the Health Sector. Dr. Van Male’s violence prevention and intervention solutions for healthcare were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Prior to joining Kroll, Dr. Van Male served as the first Senior Director of Threat Management for Kaiser Permanente’s National Security Services, the first National Director of the U.S. Veterans Health Administration’s Workplace Violence Prevention Program (founded as the Behavioral Threat Management Program) and the twice-elected Second Vice President on the ATAP national board of directors. Predating these executive leadership roles, Dr. Van Male provided over 20,000 hours of clinical service to U.S. military Veterans.
