Alan Brill, Senior Managing Director in Cyber Risk practice at Kroll, a division of Duff & Phelps, was quoted in Sarah Skidmore’s article highlighting the increase in romance scams reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The scams have gone up from 8,500 in 2015 to over 21,000 in 2018, with the amount lost by the victims having quadrupled over the same period – reaching US$143 million last year.
Alan said the criminals are "masters of manipulating human emotion" and are targeting victims when their defenses are down. He urges readers to think critically about what is being told to and asked of them.
