Reshmi Khurana Comments on the Impact of Malaysia’s Latest Political Situation on Singapore

The political situation in Malaysia faces more uncertainty with the breakup of the ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) government which started in mid-February. On February 23, the mass departure of its members meant the coalition had lost its majority seating in the parliament.

As more developments start to unfold, and more uncertainties lie ahead for the country, many are concerned about the impact on Malaysia’s neighboring trade partners like Singapore. Market observers cite immediate market reactions, but the long-term impact might be limited.

Speaking to The Edge, Reshmi Khurana, Managing Director and Head of Southeast Asia in the Business Intelligence and Investigations practice of Kroll, a division of Duff & Phelps, said this may have some short-term impact on Singapore. However, the long-term impact might be less worrying given that both countries have mature economies with diversified supply chain and investment sources.
