Kroll was nominated for the award in recognition of its innovative approach to an incident led by Michael Quinn, Managing Director in the Cyber Risk practice. Michael led the team investigating a European software company held hostage to a ransom attempt. The company was asked to pay €1million to prevent sensitive information from being publicly disseminated. Kroll analyzed the ransom message and found several leads, resulting in the identification of a suspect Gmail address, which Kroll’s analysts were able to tie to devices used by a former employee.

Kroll provided its findings to the client’s attorneys, who initiated a criminal complaint with the local jurisdiction police. The case concluded with the suspect admitting guilt and revealing a massive amount of data exfiltrated from the employer.
